Child care, or in other words, care for a child or children in a home setting or in specialized facility environment is the activity that often requires license. Child care licensing may vary by state. Generally, licensing of child care sets standards going below which means running illegal child care business. Many states on several occasion don't require child care license unless a caregiver provides services to more than a certain number of children. Each state manages child care license process, as well as regulations for centers and family homes (if regulated) in different ways.

North Carolina

In general, there are two types of programs regulated by the state of North Carolina: Family Child Care Homes and Child Care Centers. If child care services provider is caring for more than 2 children who aren't related and provides care for more than 4 hours a day, they probably should be licensed.

Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, a family day care license is required to care for 4 to 8 children aged less than 12 years, if they are not immediate relatives of the child care provider.

Alaska

In Alaska, before being licensed, Family Child Care Homes are required to be inspected for conformity with Health and Safety Regulations by the MOA Department of Health and Human Services, the body with whom also resides investigation of complaints. Child Care Licenses are issued by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Licensed Child Care Providers are obligated to put their Family Child Care Home License in a visible place in the premises. To obtain a Family Child Care Home License, the applicant must meet the Alaska Child Care Regulations, 4 AAC 62.010. A Family Child Care Home License in Alaska should be distinguished from this state's Business License, and should be applied for separately.
