Child care provider

Aside from a family's income, some programs would look into are the hours that parents are involved in work, or approved education or training. Child care assistance come in the form of subsidies that are directly paid to the child care provider.

These workers are struggling to make ends meet, and cannot afford health insurance for themselves or their families. “One of the things I like best about being a family child care provider is the one-on-one relationship with the children I care for everyday and their parents,” said Kathy Williams of Los Angeles. “AB 1164 will give providers like me a stronger voice to advocate for these families, children, and providers like me, when decisions are made in Sacramento that affect us.”

“Family child care providers are the neighbors, relatives, and friends that take care of our children while we are at work,” stated Rosie Kennedy, Organizer, United Child Care Workers (UCCW). “This bill gives them a voice to speak up on the rules and regulations that affect their working day.”

Under current law, family child care providers are considered “independent contractors” and cannot collectively negotiate on issues that affect their businesses. This bill would extend organizing rights to these workers by protecting them with the existing labor exemption to federal and state antitrust laws.

Lehigh Carbon Community College will offer a FREE Home-Based Child Care/Aide Training Program this semester. Carol Steely, a respected community leader in childcare training, will facilitate these programs. LCCC's free training programs were developed to equip students with the foundation necessary to be a Family Child Care Provider or Center-Based Aide. During each 15-week program, students will participate in 90 hours of intensive classroom instruction and 60 hours of practical lab experience at local child care facilities. Jan 2003
