NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS) suspended the license of a Nashville child care center for violating several state licensing rules. DHS took this action after concluding its licensing investigation regarding a 34-month-old child who was allegedly assaulted by a 13-year-old neighborhood teenager who entered the building without detection. "We are suspending this license under our zero tolerance policy due to the serious nature of the violations, " state Human Services Commissioner Natasha Metcalf said.

Department of Justice United States Attorney Eastern District of Washington PRESS RELEASE, January 24, 2007. 26 year old former Mattawa daycare worker, ERIKA DEL CARMEN LARA, entered a guilty plea, to felony Theft of Public Funds, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 641, for billing the State of Washington and the federal government for child care services she never provided. LARA, a citizen and national of Mexico and not lawfully in the United States during the time of her fraudulent billing, admitted that her first attempt to obtain a license using her own name and a false social security number was rejected by the State. Thus, to obtain her daycare license from the State, she stole the name and social security number of U.S. citizen. LARA was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Lonny Suko to 4 months in prison, 3 years of post-release supervision, $100 penalty assessment and ordered to pay restitution to the State of Washington in the amount of $4,804.32 and $119.60 to the USDA. According to James A. McDevitt, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, this case illustrates the need for closer scrutiny in the daycare licensing process.
