18 Grants Help Providers Improve Health and Safety Standards

New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Commissioner John A. Johnson today announced grants totaling more than $230,000 have been awarded to 18 day care providers across the state to help them improve the safety and quality of child care. These funds will help child care centers and school-age child care programs make health and safety improvements. "Governor George E. Pataki has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to quality child care by continually providing record amounts of funding and enacting measures that promote the safety and well-being of children throughout New York State," said Commissioner Johnson. "Working parents need quality, safe and affordable child care options and these grants help provide safer and healthier environments for New York's children." The grants are administered by OCFS and will help to improve health and safety for child care across New York State. Since 1995, Governor Pataki has increased funding for child care by a record $650 million, from $279 million in state fiscal year 1995-96 to $929 million in the proposed 2004-05 Executive Budget. This funding has helped support growth in the number of child care subsidies from 72,000 to approximately 183,400. The Quality Child Care and Protection Act significantly improved the quality and safety of child care by requiring criminal background checks and training requirements for all child care providers. The act also increased oversight of child care centers and strengthened enforcement actions against providers who fail to comply with health and safety regulations.

IRS Reduces Burden For Family Day Care Providers. IR-2003-20, Feb. 24, 2003. WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service announced today that family day care providers may now choose to use a standardized rate to claim the deduction for meals provided to children in their care instead of keeping detailed records and receipts of food purchased for use in their business. Use of the standardized rate will significantly reduce the recordkeeping burden of family day care providers. The change means day care providers could save an estimated 10 million hours by using the standard meal rate. If these providers decide not to use the rates, they can continue to take the deduction based on the actual cost of the meals.
