In January 2006 Duncan Investigations were contacted by a client from the state of Oklahoma, whose family member had received a letter from what seemed to be a legitimate "Secret Shopping Company". The company invited her to participate in a secret shopping investigation. The scams of the sort typically entice victims by alleging to pay them $175.00 per hour for participation. Enclosed to the letter was a cashier's cheque for $3,865 along with the brief description of what was required to be done in the investigation. The cashier's cheque turned out to be bogus. The name of the bank shown on the cheque was the non-existent North Brookfield Savings Bank, with a fake business address 36 Summer Street, N. Brookfield, MA, 01535-1417. The victim was instructed to cash the cheque at her bank and then visit a Walmart location in the United States. The instruction further told her to attend the Moneygram Service inside Walmart to evaluate the service. But first she was requested to wire the funds to a specified location in New Brunswick. After completing her evaluation form she submitted the results, as requested, to the said company to only later to discover the cashiers's cheque was fraudulent. The scam company was traced to Winnipeg, Manitoba, operating as "Secret Shoppers", 1555 Regent Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2C 2J4, phone number listed as (204) 962-1735. If you receive a letter signed by a certain David Bradley or Jamie Ingrams, don't be mislead, it's a scam. In March 2006 another client from Arizona, USA, received the same letter requesting her to cash the cheque that she received from the same company, and then attend a Moneygram agent in Walmart to evaluate the service as part of the Mystery Shoppers Program. She was instructed to wire the money to a "relative" in Moncton, New Brunswick. It took her two times to participate in this assignment to come to realize it was a scam. She went to her bank immediately, but was informed there was nothing the bank could do in an effort to recover her the $7000 she had lost. This Duncan Investigations client had been speaking with a woman she identified as Jada, phone number (204) 952-7443. If you receive a letter from a Secret Shopping Company, be careful.
