Illinois unclaimed property listings to appear in Chicago Tribune
CHICAGO, February 19, 2004 -- More than 80,000 people have a surprise waiting for them: They're the latest individuals added to the State Treasurer's list of unclaimed property owners. Those hoping for an unexpected windfall can turn to the Sunday, Feb. 22 edition of the Chicago Tribune, the only source of the information in Cook County.
The bi-annual newspaper listing alerts people for whom the state may be holding money and property. Currently, nearly 5 million individuals and businesses are entered in the state's unclaimed property database.
Examples of unclaimed property include lost wages; insurance policy payments; forgotten bank accounts; stock shares, dividends and mutual funds; security deposit checks; the contents of safe deposit boxes; and proceeds of an estate. The state safeguards the items until they can be reunited with their owners. It is estimated the state has $1 billion in unclaimed property, and almost one in five people may have something to claim.
Illinois' unclaimed property listings will appear Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Chicago Tribune, available for sale in Chicago on Saturday morning.
