Barbour County was created on 18 Dec. 1832, from former Creek Indian territory and a portion of Pike County. The county was named after the Virginia Governor James Barbour. Barbour County is situated in the southeastern section of the state, bounded by the Chattahoochee River and the State of Georgia. The county seat was established in Louisville in 1833, but in 1834 was relocated to Clayton. Nowadays, there are 2 courthouses in the Barbour County, one court is in Clayton and the other is in Eufaula.
