Marriage and Divorce Public Records in the Feeds
State Historical Society of Missouri on Marriage and Divorce Records
Marriage records are not necessarily recorded in the county where they are performed. Prior to June 26, 1881, no marriage license was required; the marriage was recorded at any convenient courthouse. Since 1881 licenses have been required. A portion of the license is returned to the Recorder where the license was obtained and the marriage is recorded in that county only. A marriage license is valid anywhere inside the boundaries of the state. The Bureau of Vital Statistics, Jefferson City, MO has maintained an index to marriage and divorce records in Missouri since July, 1948.
The State of Ohio Vital Statistics Office maintains abstracts of marriages and divorces that occurred in Ohio from January 1, 1954, to present. Abstract is not a marriage license or divorce decree. Abstracts are brief forms that list limited information extracted from the original marriage licenses or divorce decrees. This limited information is used for index purposes and the filing of the marriage or divorce within the State of Ohio.
