The Matters Rhode Island District Court Records May Cover. District Court jurisdiction includes small claims, violations of municipal ordinances and regulations, and certain misdemeanors. District Court also hears violations of state and local housing codes (except when there's a Municipal Court established with limite jurisdictions over such case); violations involving involuntary hospitalization under the mental-health, drug-abuse, and alcoholism laws. Appeals from District Court decisions go to the Superior Court. District Court hears appeals from the state tax administrator and several regulatory agencies and boards rulings. Since the majority of people brought before a court in the state of Rhode Island initially appear in the District Court, the Rhode Island District Court has been divided into 5 divisions to provide easy access to the state's court system geographically.

On Workers Comp public court records: Rhode Island Workers’ Compensation Court has jurisdiction over all employer - employee disputes and workers’ compensation related matters. The Rhode Island Workers’ Compensation Court deals with more than 8,000 petitions each year. Over 70% of the disputes are resolved within 1 month from the date of filing. The Workers’ Compensation Court has adopted its own rules of procedure and periodically amended them to address statutory changes which have revised the court’s jurisdiction. The rules are published for the use of the bar and the general public. Before 1954 workers’ compensation cases were heard in the Rhode Island Superior Court.

Petitions for divorce and any motions in conjunction with divorce proceedings, such as property distribution, alimony, support, and child custody are being heard by the Rhode Islad Family Court with the appropriate public records being maintained. The court hears petitions for separate maintenance and complaints regarding support for parents and children and has jurisdiction over matters relating to delinquent, wayward, dependent, neglected, abused, or mentally deficient or disordered children, as well as adoptions, child marriages, paternity proceedings, domestic relations and juveniles.
