According to the Pennsylvania Disposition of Abanoned & Unclaimed Property Act 72 P.S. §§1301.1-1301.29, property is considered abandoned or unclaimed if someone other than the owner holds the property for 5 years and in the case of uncashed wage checks for 3 years and has not had any contact with the owner. Unclaimed property includes inactive bank accounts, unclaimed securities, unused gift certificates, abandoned safe deposit boxes, jewelry, rare coins and stamps. Banks, insurance companies and other businesses are required to transfer property to Treasury if it remains unclaimed for more than 7 years. Police departments are required to transfer property to Treasury if it remains unclaimed for more than 1 year.
