Unclaimed money county news on the county level - Fairfax County, Virginia

In Virginia the State law provides that any holder of the money deemed unclaimed (unclaimed money) is obligated to file a report of the unclaimed money and remit the money before November 1 of each year. The Virginia Fairfax County Department of Finance works to return to the rightful owners unclaimed money that may have accumulated most usually as the result of a check bounced by the Post Office or an expired check etc. Filing a claim for the money in custody with Fairfax County Government is free. The Finance Department reported approximately $1.4 million in previously unclaimed money as returned to rightful owners, the majority of which had never realized that the Fairfax County Government owed them some unclaimed money.

Fairfax County DOF undertakes efforts to reach the owners of unclaimed money/property held in custody, such as mailing notification to the owner's last known address reminding them about the dormant status of the property. Also the Fairfax County submits a special report to the State of Virginia Treasury to annually publish the owner's names in the newspaper.
